While no lives were lost, between 50 and 100 homes were destroyed by the EF-3 tornado that touched down in the Great Neck portion of the city Sunday evening, April 30.
It was the first of its kind for that area of the state, and a first for the F3s since the 1950s, the NWS said.
The Great Neck Recreation Center is open to those impacted for a hot shower or power to charge any devices. Grief counselors are also available to anyone who may need their services until 5 p.m.
City Manager Patrick Duhaney declared a local state of emergency following the storm.
